In 2005 if you had been living in Africa were making international calls from there then probably you might have been shelling out $1 or more per minute for making these calls but the prices started tumbling by 2006 where just around nineteen African telcos were charging the call rate stated above and now trend is that around half of the companies are charging just 25 cents for making these calls.



You must be wondering what resulted in a sudden fall in prices and I must tell you its all the magic of VoIP rather it would be better to say that it is the VoIP pressure which has caused the rates to plummet. Legalization of VoIP and increased competition has forced these carriers to bring down the call rates. Even the grey market was affecting the companies and probably they realized that their very existence could be put to jeopardy if they did not correct their call pricing.

This is a surely encouraging trend for Africa and cheaper calls are expected to increase the competitiveness of Africa worldwide.
