eported net earnings today of $3,024 million for the 12 months to 30 June 2007, mostly boosted by a one-off abnormal gain of $2,084 million from the sale of the Yellow Pages Group.

Adjusted net earnings after tax was $955 million for the 12 months, an increase of 16.5% compared with the $820 million posted for the same period in 2006. Higher net earnings reflected lower tax expense and depreciation and amortisation costs.

According to

the compay, the result included four abnormal items in the current 12 months listed below:

- a gain of $2,084 million recorded in April 2007 arising from the sale of the Yellow Pages Group
- a gain of $20 million on the sale of Telecom’s 90% stake in Telecom Samoa Cellular Limited (Q1 06/07);
- restructuring costs totalling $36 million ($24 million net of tax) as part of Telecom’s company wide organisational re-design
provision of $16 million ($11 million net of tax) for the cost of rectifying several billing issues, mostly relating to prior periods (the list of abnormals is at the end of this release).

“The fourth quarter was particularly busy with a number of highlights,” said Telecom New Zealand chairman Wayne Boyd.

“We announced the appointment of Paul Reynolds as chief executive. Paul joins us from British Telecom where he has been managing that company’s wholesale business. We are looking forward to having Paul join us late next month,” Mr Boyd said.

“And we are making good progress on our capital return programme following the sale of the Yellow Pages Group. We have a special shareholder meeting scheduled for August 17 in Wellington, which requires 75% shareholder approval. Assuming we get both court and shareholder consent the transaction should be completed in October.

“In June we announced that we would invest $300 million to build a WCDMA mobile network that will run alongside our 027 mobile network. The new network, due to be deployed in late 2008, will enable our customers to roam virtually anywhere in the world.

Acting chief executive Simon Moutter said the Q4 result was in line with expectations.

He also commented that mobile revenue growth is now slowing, reflecting competitive intensity and market penetration in excess of 100%. The company expects low single digit revenue growth to be sustainable in the current environment and bets that future revenue growth is likely to be determined more by applications and content.

Telecom retail is said to be on track to launch a Yahoo!XTRA closed portal services in the first half of 2007/2008. Customers will have access to personalised home pages, upgraded email and enhanced security services and increased online storage.

On the services front, Mr Moutter said Telecom’s IT business Gen-I had performed strongly in Q4 and for the full year with double-digit annual growth being posted in both periods.

In New Zealand, total operating revenue was $4,300 million for the 12 months, an increase of 1.2%, and $1,093 million for the June quarter, a 1.4% increase.

The company says the higher operating revenues for mobile, IT services and other operating revenue were partly offset by declines in interconnection, data and internet.

Total local service revenue was stable on $1,049 million.

Access revenues increased slightly but the gains were offset by a decrease in local call revenues which was due to businesses migrating from dial-up to broadband services.

Residential access lines dipped slightly by 0.8% to 1,403 million.

Calling revenue comprises national calling (national calls, calls to mobile networks and national 0800) and international calling (calls out of and into New Zealand and transit call traffic between destinations worldwide). This is the distribution for this line:

- National call revenue was $534 million, a decrease of 7.5%
- International revenue was $380 million, an increase of 11.1%
- Other revenue of $48 million was down 2%
- Total calling revenue was $962 million, a dip of 0.6%

Interconnection revenue, which includes termination of calls on both fixed and mobile networks, declined 8.2% to $146 million. The decline reflects the impact of lower mobile termination rates.

Mobile revenue is derived from voice and data services on Telecom’s 027 network (CDMA), with the following highlights:

- Total mobile revenues increased 5.4% to $816 million
- Voice revenues were down 0.8% to $522 million
- Data revenue increased 27.5% to $218 million
- Total connections at 30 June 2007 were 1,977,000 compared with 1,703,000 a year before
- Net mobile connection growth for the June quarter was 41,000, an increase of 2.1% on the previous quarter

Total ARPUs (average revenue per user – monthly) including interconnection were $43.10 for the 12 months

Mobile data revenue growth continues to be driven by services such as music downloads, text messaging, 3G broadband data use, with a total revenue decline of 3.9% to $421 million for the 12 months and by 6.3% to $104 million for the June quarter. Decreases in traditional data services were partly offset by an increase in Managed IP data services. Managed IP data services revenue increased 9.9% to $177 million. The decline reflected the migration away from legacy data products to new platforms such as One Office, and the reduction in wholesale data prices.

Total broadband revenue was $274 million, an increase of 3%.

Consumer revenue increased by 27.9% to $156 million. Business revenue declined by 37.3% to $69 million, reflecting the large reduction in business broadband pricing when business and residential prices were aligned in October 2006.

Total DSL (includes residential, business and wholesale) and mobile broadband connections of 653,000 at 30 June 2007, an increase of 40.4% from June 2006.

The IT revenue (mainly generated by Gen-i businesses) was $380 million, an increase of 9.8%. In the June quarter revenue was $116 million, an increase of 19.6%. Revenue from key contracts including the Ministry of Justice and Westpac bolstered overall IT revenues.

Australian operations showed a revenue decline to A$1,150 million, a decrease of 3.5%. EBITDA was A$44 million, down 41.3%. Loss from operations was A$26 million, a reduction of 65.8%

services over a unified messaging platform to Sprint’s more than 53 million customers. The company currently provides the communications messaging platform for a subset of the Sprint wireless network.

The plan is to deliver enhanced voicemail, multimedia, entertainment, and other enhanced services on a single platform.

Data Connection Limited (DCL) was selected as one of the key partners for the next generation voice messaging. DCL will be providing the voice messaging software for the communications messaging platform.

Unisys provides voice messaging and enhanced communications services with customers in over 40 countries and more than 150 million voicemail users. Telecom New Zealand uses the Unisys voice mail platform, but is in the process of migrating to a new platform provided by a competitor.

rch estimates that 263.8 million mobile handsets were shipped in 2Q 2007, a year-over-year quarterly increase of 13%. “A 13% increase is hardly stellar,” says Jake Saunders, vice president at ABI Research, “but it does pay the handset vendors’ bills. The second half of the year should prove more robust, ending the year with 15% YoY growth at 1.13 billion.”

“More dramatic was Nokia’s continued consolidation of the handset market,” adds wireless

research director Stuart Carlaw. “Nokia’s market share grew by 1.4% to 37.3% in the second quarter, the largest increase in market share of all the vendors. LG and Sony Ericsson also made respectable gains of 0.8% and 0.6%. Samsung’s market share increase was more muted. Since Motorola has retrenched from emerging markets, and is still in the process of revamping its handset portfolio, it should not come as too much of a surprise that Motorola’s handset market share shrank to 13.1% compared to 17.1% in 1Q 2007. It was only two quarters ago that Motorola’s market share was 22.1%.”

The vacuum created by Motorola’s loss of market share is creating opportunities for other vendors. Samsung and LG have announced their intentions to penetrate the Indian, Chinese, and Southeast Asian markets. Other vendors are expanding their presences outside their core markets. Research In Motion reported that 30% of its BlackBerry subscribers are now based outside North America. Similarly Sony Ericsson has been able to harness its Cybershot (camera-centric) and Walkman (media-centric) handsets to expand its presence well beyond Europe.

Nokia managed to maintain its handset average selling price (EUR 90 vs EUR 89) through the introduction of a number of mid to high end handset models. Most other vendors, however, saw heavy declines in ASP.

According to the reseaech company, North America is definitely where Nokia’s problems are. Despite a number of initiatives by Nokia senior management to bolster its presence in the North American market, handset shipments shrank further, from 4.8 to 4.1 million in 2Q-2007.

While Apple’s iPhone is not going to alter the North American competitive landscape radically in the foreseeable future, Nokia’s perceived weakness in the CDMA handset market, the iPhone, and a number of other smartphone vendors, such as RIM, are curbing Nokia’s traction in the North American market.

(PRLEAP.COM) XCome Technology, a global leading application innovator for mobile carriers and handset manufacturers in the wireless world today announced that it has completed interoperability testing of its OMA-IMPS client version 1.3 in the OMA TestFest 19.

During the TestFest, which was held in Beijing, China from May 17 to May 25th, 2007 at the world’s largest operator, China Mobile labs, XCome demonstrated that its OMA-IMPS

client is able to interoperate with the servers and clients of a number of industry leading organizations.

“As this is our second participation in the OMA TestFest, we found that it offers an excellent neutral venue where vendors can test their product interoperability by working together” said Arindam Bhattacharjee, XCome R&D manager, who led XCome delegation to the TestFest. “It has been an excellent experience to exchange with international engineers to help define OMA standards as well as validate our product quality. Given the importance of interoperability, with our OMA-IMPS version 1.3 client, we made significant progress towards fulfilling the operators’and manufacturers’mobile messaging needs for global scale communication. This helped us build upon our experience from our previous attendance in December 2006 at TestFest 17 and once again connect with the OMA-IMPS development community.”

Like all products in the XMessenger line, the OMA-IMPS client version 1.3 impresses through its user friendly UI, its flexibility and the ease with which it can be ported to different operating systems and platforms.

It is also technically possible for XCome’s OMA-IMPS solutions to provide interconnectivity with various public IMs. A number of operators will also look for their IMPS networks to connect to public IMs like Windows Live Messenger, ICQ or Yahoo Messenger. As soon as these operators have an agreement with the respective public IM provider, they can take advantage of XCome’s OMA-IMPS solution and connect their networks to the public IMs.

About the XMessenger OMA-IMPS Solution
XCome’s OMA-IMPS solution is an essential part of the operators’own network.
This solution client can be easily installed in any handset and is rapidly integrated into mobile operators’network environment and operations systems. Without being limited by different handset performance levels, this solution offers all the essential IM functions, presence service as well as IM infrastructure supporting features without heavy memory requirements.

About XCome Technology Co., Ltd
XCome is the world leader in innovating software applications for telecom operators and handset manufacturers. Dedicated to the latest mobile based technology, XCome has launched a comprehensive and user-friendly series of products to enrich users’ mobile lives.

(PRLEAP.COM) August 1, 2007 - Washington, DC & Hollywood, Calif. “We found more than 200 classified government documents in a few hours search over Peer-2-Peer networks,” said Retired General Wesley K. Clark at a recent Government Reform Committee hearing (7-24-07). Describing it as the new national security risk Clark said, “We found everything from Pentagon network server secrets to other sensitive information on P-2P networks hackers dream about.”

Clark, now the chairman and CEO, of Wesley K. Clark & Associates, and a board member of Tiversa, Inc., which conducts 350 million searches per day, compared to Google’s 150 million daily searches.

“If everyone knew the scope of the risk of P2P networks, America would be outraged and demand solutions” Clark suggested regulation and mandatory defensive active monitoring programs, especially for sensitive government documents. “If you wait for the lawsuit, you have waited too long.” Clark noted that many of our national information security leaks were fresh, complete and often were distributed on home computers over P2P networks.

Chairman Henry Waxman (D) investigating the P2P networks invited LimeWire and StreamCast to testify along with other interested experts on illegal filesharing before the U.S. Houses of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Last March, United States Patent and Trademark Office released a study revealing that inadvertent file-sharing continued to threaten individual privacy and national security.

“This is the new threat to Homeland Security,” CEO Robert Boback, told the hearing. “We found thousands of corporate cases from banking statements, server passwords, financial data, public company data, human resources, medical records and fortune 500 company minutes on compliance.”

“One of the defining characteristics of contaminated networks is that users rarely ever know that they are sharing the files on their computer with other users on the network,” said SafeMedia Corporation Chairman Safwat Fahmy in his written testimony on how SafeMedia’s technology was developed to address illegal sharing of copyrighted materials on contaminated P2P networks. “Our technology eliminates all the identity theft and security risks of contaminated P2P networks that affect consumers, students, businesses and our national security.”

Fahmy also stated in his written testimony to the Committee that, “P2P networks, in order to work and survive, requires that all users share files. If users are unable to share files to be downloaded, then the network would be pointless and cease to exist. So, the developers of the P2P software create a directory on the user’s computer called “shared” to be uploaded on demand to any user on the entire network most often without the user knowledge, at the time of installation.”
Other startling testimony surfaced from Professor M. Eric Johnson, director, Center for Digital Strategies, Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College. To illustrate the threat of P2P file sharing, his researchers ran a set of “honey-pot” experiments. They posted the text of an email message containing an active VISA (debit) number and an AT&T phone card in a music directory in a contaminated P2P network that was shared via Limewire.

“It appears that two takers of the card were able to obtain funds as the activity was split into two groups,” Johnson told the hearing. And it happened, “because one taker used Paypal, which is more US-centric, while the other used Nochex, which is UK-centric. Within another week, the calling card was also depleted. Examining the call records of the card, all of the calls were made from outside of the US to two US area codes - 347 (Bronx, NY) and 253 (Tacoma, WA), illustrating the P2P threat both within and outside of the US. Even more interesting, long after we stopped sharing the file, we observed the file continuing to move to new clients as some of the original takers leaked the file to others.”

In a second study, researchers examined bank-related documents and found circulating sensitive data as bank statements, credit reporting agency records, user ID and password lists and tax returns were inadvertently “shared” with millions of people. There was also evidence of sensitive government information being distributed through P2P networks over a two-month period.
“At SafeMedia, we have developed business solutions combining P2P Disaggregator technology (P2PD) and a Digital Internet Distribution Solution (DIDS) that prevents contaminated P2P networks from indiscriminately being accessed by users’ computers,” explained Fahmy. “Our solutions utilize advanced technologies such as: Adaptive Fingerprinting and DNA markers; Adaptive network patterns; Intelligent libraries; Remote update and Self-healing to effectively drop all contaminated P2P traffic with No Invasion of User Privacy. P2PD is fully effective at forensically discriminating between contaminated and non-contaminated P2P traffic with no false positives whether encrypted or not: P2PD operates at network speed with little or no latency.”

Fahmy added “The purpose of P2PD technology is not to shut down P2P networks or inhibit P2P technology. “We allow traffic from non contaminated P2P to pass to its destination we only drop traffic to and from contaminated P2P networks
“Many users now are enjoying the protection of their identity and safety of their network from contaminated P2P network by using SafeMedia’s products which are available now for immediate implementation in DSL/Cable modems or as a standalone network appliance named” Clouseau” said Fahmy.
